When we first began reading Pride and Prejudice I immediately started taking note of every interchange between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. Why? Well, because they were going to end up together, of course. Or at least I thought the “of course” was obvious. Obviously, of course.
It seems to me that a happy ending of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy are part of the public knowledge. So as we were navigating the first pages of the novel I raised the following question amongst my fellow bloggers and their beloveds:
If you somehow managed to get through life without ever hearing of Pride and Prejudice would you be able to guess the ending, and if so, how soon?
At which point my beloved said:
I don’t know how it ends.
Really?!?! Really. So I’ve been unmercifully quizzing him along the way to see if he’s yet figured out what will happen. The Liz/Darcy relationship unfolded to him fairly quickly, he even saw the Lydia/Wickham debacle coming. And now as he nears the end he only has one more concern: Will Jane and Bingley’s relationship ever be realized?
But what I really want to know is if he’s braced himself for the surprise visit of Catherine de Bourgh.
And while we’re at it, have you always known the book’s ending? Was there anything that took you by surprise?
