Jane, what would have happened if…

23 Feb

Don’t get me wrong.  I’m glad Jane and Rochester ended up together.

I’m just wondering what would have happened if Jane had learned that her former employer (and true love) had been terribly injured in the fire AND that his insane wife was still alive.

Ghostly voices in the wind or not: would she have gone to see Rochester?  Would she have gone to see him but then refused to stay with him?  Would he have asked her to stay?  Remember, he’s in a new relationship with God now.

What would have happened if Bertha Rochester had lived?

Ever since you first brought this possibility to my mind I’ve been giving it a good deglutition. This is what I fear: She would have quickly caught up with St. John and gone to India as his wife. Even though she was resigned not to marry him, I believe finding her true love a hopeless cause she would have viewed the act as a self-imposed penance for loving one who did not belong to her.

Oh, you are probably right… and I don’t like that optional ending at all! If Bertha lives, it’s a slow death for Jane.
