chattel – property

Classical Usage:  When learning the history of Eliza’s husband, George we find out that he had invented a machine for cleaning hemp, but his master was less than impressed, “This same gentleman, having heard of the fame of George’s invention, took a ride over to the factory, to see what this intelligent chattel had been about.”

Classically Mad Usage:  I can tell you this, I won’t be using this word to describe a person.  Yikes, this slavery stuff is shocking.  No, in my house it will probably be more useful in sentences like this, “Son, give that back to your brother, it’s his chattel.”
