That’s Odd

30 May

eldritch –  adj.  weird, eerie, unearthly

Classical Usuage:  Topsy, of course, is the eldritch one of which the HBS speaks, but in this passage she is delivering flowers to a dying Eva and it is that odd, sinister aspect of her character that is missing, “Topsy, who had stood sullenly, holding down her head, now came up and offered her flowers.  She did it with a look of hesitation and bashfulness, quite unlike the eldritch boldness and brightness which was usual with her.”

Classically Mad Usage:  I nearly forgot to post a Classic Word of the Day today.  A day without a word would be, well, eldritch.
