desuetude – n.  state of disuse

Classical Usage:  Cassy’s escape plan hinges on the legend of the haunted garret, a legend she must partially revive, Gradually, the staircase that led to the garret, and even the passage-way to the staircase, were avoided by every one in the house, from every one fearing to speak of it, and the legend was gradually falling into desuetude.

Classically Mad Usage:  I’m afraid if I don’t keep reading expanding my vocabulary my brain will fall into desuetude.
