Stupid Questions: POV Edition

16 Jun

So, was anyone else confused when Madame Bovary began in first person and then abruptly switched to omniscient point of view in the middle of the first chapter?

What was that about?

Who was the brief classmate of Charles?

When do writers start getting editors?

Oddly enough, I did not even notice the switch of POV, so I guess I can say that it didn’t throw me off. I have often wondered about the classmate though. Interesting.

It only threw me for a loop because I read the chapter in two different sittings separated by a couple of days. I was starting to question my own recollection and sanity, so I went back and retraced the whole thing. I don’t know if I’m happy or not that the problem lies with Flaubert and not me.

Maybe by the time we reach the end we’ll have discovered some grand purpose in the classmate and POV shift.

Oh, for the answer to number 3. I wonder if it will become instantly obvious to us.
