In Part 2, Chapter I, Kitty has to undergo an apparently barbaric, embarrassing medical practice that my book calls “sounding.”   What exactly is this?   The only thing I could get from a quick search was using a sort of listening device on a patient, but that hardly sounds as bad as what Kitty apparently had to undergo.   Medical experts?

I don’t know, but I really want to. Considering the state of medicine and women’s modesty at the time, it could be practically anything.

I found the chapter and read it; I think that it consisted of a thorough examination of Kitty with few or no clothes covering her chest. That would certainly be enough to humiliate her. They talk about lungs a lot so I’m guessing he listened to her breathing, maybe did some tapping or pounding on her back.

    Thanks for the ideas!
