Stupid Question: Practical Joke Edition

Snipe hunting?

Okay, that’s not exactly a fully formed question, and I realize (now) that the snipe is an actual bird.

Yes.  Really.  See:

But I’m having a hard time taking Levin’s snipe hunting ventures with Sergei seriously.  Where I come from if your older know-it-all brother wants to go snipe hunting you’ve been had.  Had, I tell you.

So maybe my question is actually this:  Is Tolstoy playing with us here?

I had a flashback when I saw “snipe hunting!” I remember watching a Spin and Marty episode from the ol’ Mickey Mouse Club in which they tricked some kids into snipe hunting while they were at camp. So I actually had to look it up too!

I thought of the movie Up where the man tries to get rid of the little scout on his doorstep by sending him on a snipe hunt.

Gah!!! Up, yet another thing I haven’t seen! I’m so culturally unaware.

“Snipe” makes me think of the episode Little House when Laura and Mary are called “long-legged snipes” because their old dresses were a bit too short!

I posted the scene from YouTube on my Classical Quest FB page.

I remember reading this part in the Little House series and feeling terribly hurt for Mary and Laura.

Spin and Marty, Little House on the Prairie – apparently I missed all the good TV when I was a kid. Good thing I could go snipe hunting to keep myself entertained.

      There are snipes in Nebraska?

Oh, thanks for the picture! I was wondering what those birds looked like (they show up pretty much every time Levin is involved).

Yes, and there is a “double snipe” later. Want to research what that looks like too for us all? Thanks.
