Now that you’ve met Lily Bart…

29 Apr

House of Mirth Check-in

What do you think of Lily Bart?

I’m finding her a mix of Emma Bovary and Anna Karenina: obsessed with possessions and manipulative of men.

Even so, I’m sticking with the story.  I want to know how the title figures in.  I haven’t seen evidence of a lot of mirth.

How did your reading go this week?  Please leave your place in the comments.

I’m on chapter 10 now. An easy read just not one of my favorites – like you I’m noticing the similarities between Lily and Anna and Emma.

I’m halfway through Part Two, so nearly done. Lily is very difficult to like. If I try I can manage some pity.

Anna, Emma, and even a little Eustacia and Isabel Archer rolled into one.

I just finished chapter 12 of book one today, but not able to get in as much reading as I would have liked.

Of course, Eustacia! How could I forget her man-hunting/quest for wealth?

I’ve been caught in a never-ending loop of Chapter 14 for the last three days. Hopefully this evening I’ll be able to break through and finish Book One.

Here’s my dirty little secret: I like Lily. But now that I see that everyone else is struggling with her and comparing her to my least favorite literary damsels I’m going to have to evaluate my feelings.

She is likable. There are qualities about her that give hope; and then there are those that cause pity. She’s a mixed bag. I don’t think she’s evil, but I just think she is confused. Or maybe I am being too sensitive about her. We’ll see.

Whew, I feel better now, thank you. And I’m afraid you’re probably right about the whole “we’ll see” thing, I’m a little concerned for her future.

I like Lily too. In the same way I liked Anna K (at least at the start). Everyone likes her; that’s part of her magic. But I too am nervous about how this is going to end.
